HELLO!I wish my website would update itself depending on my mood. Or based on who is reading it? Too bad!
If you're here, you may want to know things about me. So:
I am an artist/person who makes experiences in many formats including but not limited to: performances, software, virtual worlds, workshops, animation, websites, ill-defined forms, technology experiments, words, bad jokes...In most of what I do, I try to figure out what a technology (broadly speaking) does or might do, and use it to communicate something I’ve been researching, noticing, or experiencing.
Things that interest me are: the relationship between large systems and personal experience, the impact of emerging media, communication, embodiment, perception, worlds, ecosystems, poetry, kindness.&nbsp;
Sometimes I just make things to connect to someone: maybe you, maybe myself.

WHAT ELSE?
I am from Los Angeles (the valley!) and now live in New York. I grew up using chatrooms (a lot), obsessed with the internet and the way it connected me to a much bigger, and different world.
In 2007 I moved to the Bay Area to study poetry and ended up interested in media theory, with a particular focus on how real-time text-based communication (like texting) changes written expression, and more broadly how new technologies affect ways to connect with each other (for better or worse).
After spending lots of time with poets, making writing that experimented with (mis-)using new technologies (like autocorrect, real-time collaboration, web collage) I decided I wanted to learn how to work with computers in a deeper way. So, I moved to NYC, where I was introduced to all kinds of other ways of making things using (and still mis-using) software, hardware, and code and fell in love with interactivity as a medium.&nbsp;

Recently, I’ve been thinking about what it means to be an artist. Maybe it means to be a lens. So I think it is also worth mentioning things that deeply shaped my worldview: the experience of growing as a misfit in my surroundings, with a father with early-onset dementia, and with a grandmother who survived concentration camps and came to the US from Greece with my mother as a displaced person. Obviously, there are more details, but how much time do you have?
I value change, laughter, flexibility, creativity, connection, critical thinking, and apparently being extremeley cheesy.&nbsp;
Things I am involved with: collabs More&amp;More Unlimited and is this THING on?, the New Museum's cultural incubator, NEW INC (where I am a mentor), Future Space, ONX studio. I am an Asisstant Arts Professor at&nbsp;IMA/ITP at NYU, where I teach interactive media art.
I was once the artist behind Apple’s [AR]T Lab, co-creating an augmented reality art workshop that ran at all Apple stores around the world, and have done other high-profile creative experimentations with emerging technologies with places like Adobe and Bell Labs.

Do you need a more official sounding bio for some reason? Well don't worry, here it is.
Do you want to keep updated on what’s happening? Sign up for my mailing list or follow me on ”x” or instagram or bluesky?.&nbsp;
Do you want to get a better sense of what I do? Take a look at my projects page, it is not always up to date.
Do you want to work with me, or talk to me? Send me a message or book a virtual studio visit.&nbsp;
IDK, I am open to feedback.&nbsp;

EXPERT GIVES A TOUR
is a sort of clown performance.&nbsp;
Viewers follow EXPERT (who also knows nothing) as they stumble through the musuem, pointing out objects of interest as they go. With no real knowledge to guide them, EXPERT relies on the audience to suggest their expertise and lets the AI do the thinking for them.

EXPERT gives a tour uses a (totally vibe-coded, very breakable) custom software + tech stack. As the camrea points at an object, a description of the object as it relates to the suggested theme is genreated by an LLM. The description is played aloud on a speaker, and transcribed on screen for live-streamed viewers.&nbsp;

FOREVER MEETINGS&nbsp; is a series of software-driven artworks of endlessly evolving conversations between AI-driven avatars.

Built in custom real-time software, each iteration runs fully locally (offline), foregrounding the tendencies of the model itself. Avatars are given opposing personas, a style of conversation, and a prompt (for instance: “gossip about whether the nuclear family is anti-feminist”) and the dialogue unfolds until the prompts refresh and a new theme begins. The works take form as large-scale projections, sculptural wallworks, and screen-based pieces.

Across the series, conversation itself is the medium. The avatars perform cliche cultural scripts, inhabiting exaggerated personas and rhetorical styles as they attempt to reason through questions drawn from the artist's own curiosities, positions, and lived experiences. Because the system continuously reshuffles prompts the dialogue never resolves: it drifts, repeats, contradicts itself, and evolves over time. The fact that the model is locally stored allows the work to act as a time-capsule of the moment the model was initially trained, with the prompts dredging through its ultimately static knowledge base.

The work highlights that LLMs as conversational partners are trained on human language, and reveals and exaggerates the patterns of discourse of its original training set. In its cliches, it's often ridiculous, but occasionally relatable, which can be equally disturbing as it is comforting: someone else has thought these thoughts before.

HUMAN IN THE LOOP

MEETINGS RESEARCH: HUMAN IN THE LOOP (12-10-2024) was a performance in two parts: ENCODING and DECODING that took place as apart of a residency at the Center for Performance Research. &nbsp;

PART I: ENCODING was an experiential happening in which ~60 audience members were guided to converse with someone they didn’t know. The conversation, and descriptions of the audience members, were then input as data into a custom LLM-based script-generating system.

DECODING was a live stage performance in three acts. As the audience took their seats, the collected data was used to generate a script. Using wearable displays, printers, and phones, actors received their lines in real time, performing a kind of embodied text-to-speech algorithm (which is maybe just a funny way of saying… they read the lines).

Different prompts to the system (additional moods and speaking styles) as well as choreography for the actors, layered upon each other until the performance became an abstract dance, ultimately descending to chaos.

The three acts were punctuated by my own real-time, semi-improvised, typed monologue, which served as the basis for a generative soundscape: an evolving musical score running throughout the piece.

My intention was, in many ways, experimental. I started with a question: what might be revealed by scrambling the machine learning pipeline, moving the "human-in-the-loop" from invisible roles (labelers, engineers, content creators) to explicit ones (via this audience-input, actor-output process)? Perhaps this scramble could help us capture something about this critical inflection point in technology, at a time when the relationship between machine learning and human knowledge isn’t (yet?) crystalized.

If you’re reading this in the future, I guess we’ll know a little more about whether that intention was met.

SUPERPROMPT

SUPERPROMPT

is a body of work made in 2023 about conversation in the evolving landscape of spatial computing and artificial intelligence. SUPERPROMPT takes form as custom software (built using unity, web technologies, large language models, and VR) used to produce livestreamed avatar performances, interactive installation, and video.
Central to SUPERPROMPT is an avatar that is sometimes inhabited by me, sometimes by anonymous guests (as an extension of the work NEW MEETINGS), and sometimes by a conversational large language model (which I named “Sophie” after a conversation in which ChatGPT had hallucinated a performance I had done for the Whitney 2019 biennial by the same name).&nbsp;
In a series of performances called MEETINGS, these different inhabitations of the avatar (me, guest, and the LLM Sophie) are put in conversation with each other (me and a guest, me and Sophie, or Sophie and Sophie). MEETINGS are livestreamed as as 2d animations as they occur in real-time.
Framed to the audience and participants as "open-ended meetings about whatever", these performances attend to conversation itself as creative material, inspired by emergent conversational frameworks like community agreements, Bohm Dialogues and Non-Violent Communication.&nbsp;
Keeping the material of conversation central, the first installation of this body of work, which took place at bitforms gallery in Summer 2023, focussed on the act of shaping Sophie's conversational style through "superprompts," - bits of instructional texts appended to prompts for Sophie that would dictate Sophie’s apparent “personality”. My hope was to draw attention to the emerging trend of conversation-as-interface with tools like ChatGPT. Conversations between me and Sophie would culminate in new iterations of Sophie superprompts, with instructions including things like "speak like a Valley girl from 2005" and "you are a docent at an art show." These were then put into the software system as iterations of Sophies that could be conversed with, both by Sarah, as well as by visitors to the installation.

NEW MEETINGS (2021- ongoing)&nbsp;is a real-time animated performance / livestream of meetings about whatever, inspired by the idea that a conversation is a creative act and a curiosity about how new media changes how we connect.
After a time where, for many people, nearly all encounters became virtually-mediated "meetings": what IS a meeting? What isn't? What might a meeting be in the future?

Two people in different physical locations (me and a guest) share a virtual environment (using VR headsets), following an agreed upon set of parameters to encourage emergent and open-ended conversation.<img width="1000" height="546" width_o="1000" height_o="546" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7a916d0855275d1eeedc984355df884ca6450faa785871b398829c7428d54a48/IHAveAMeeting.gif" data-mid="130879100" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7a916d0855275d1eeedc984355df884ca6450faa785871b398829c7428d54a48/IHAveAMeeting.gif" />

As each person speaks, their avatar is raised higher on a platform. To remain at eye-level, each person needs to speak a relatively equal amount.

<img width="1919" height="1078" width_o="1919" height_o="1078" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9172af958b3d1fd603de602777942a38880849c15afb86b4d552e1ba09c0b126/Screen-Shot-2021-10-01-at-4.29.00-PM.png" data-mid="130879873" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9172af958b3d1fd603de602777942a38880849c15afb86b4d552e1ba09c0b126/Screen-Shot-2021-10-01-at-4.29.00-PM.png" />

The meeting "ends" when both participants have spoken enough that their platforms have reached the top of the virtual space, and both touch the sphere that represents the "end of the meeting". <img width="3348" height="1868" width_o="3348" height_o="1868" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e59cfee18ae23d492cc4713919db8e43f518562b6a92e42385bdcd8431089361/newmeetings_screenshot_soCloseToTheBigThing.png" data-mid="130879867" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e59cfee18ae23d492cc4713919db8e43f518562b6a92e42385bdcd8431089361/newmeetings_screenshot_soCloseToTheBigThing.png" />

The audience, in-person and online (at whatever.biz), can observe their meeting and conversation as a live-animated artwork, rednered in an evolving parametric style.

In 2021, operating as CHANNEL WHATEVER (with key collaborators&nbsp;Nate Turley and Savannah Phillips-Falk), we began prototyping this most recent iteration in the form of an durational performance, installation, and livestream, debuting as a work-in-progress at the ONX studio showcase.
During the showcase, 30 meetings were conducted and streamed, in which I did not know who I was talking to until the end of the meeting! Meetings included a diverse array of participants, including artists David Byrne, Molly Soda, Bobby Wooten, Karen Wong, and Claire Hentschker, among others.
The unededited streams can be found here: NEW MEETINGS from the ONX Studio Showcase, Summer 2021.&nbsp;
NEW MEETINGS was restaged as part of SUPERPROMPT, resulting in the following three edited “episodes”:&nbsp;

For the Biennale Nationale de Sculpture Contemporaine at Espace Pauline-Julien, I assembled a site-specific installation involving discarded electronics, in part provided by Uni-Recycle, and in part by visitors to the exhibition. For the duration of this exhibition, visitors can come with their own small pieces of unwanted electronics, and drop them off to add to the installation (to be collected by Uni-Recycle at the end of the show).This installation was made in dialogue with an earlier artwork about water, a Virtual Reality experience called WATER WITHOUT WET, which was also on view at Espace Pauline-Julien.
Artist stateament and Bibliography.
